Click on No in this window. 1.2 Installing DECwrite V3.1 using the VMSINSTAL command procedure RESTRICTION: DECwrite Installation Guide for OpenVMS Systems Section 2.2 Step 3 describes the VMSINSTAL command to start DECwrite V3.0. WORKAROUND: Enter the following command to start VMSINSTAL for DECwrite V3.1. $ @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL DECWRITE031 device-name OPTIONS N 1.3 Assessing the Release Notes for DECwrite V3.1 RESTRICTION: DECwrite Installation Guide for OpenVMS Systems Section 2.2 step 9 describes the location of the DECwrite V3.0 Release Notes. WORKAROUND: The text version for the DECwrite V3.1 Release Notes is contained in the file DECWRITE031.RELEASE_NOTES in the SYS$HELP: directory. The bookreader version of the release notes is contained in the file DECWRITE031_ RELEASE_NOTES.DECW$BOOK in the WRITE$EXAMPLES: directory. System Manager Notes 1-1 System Manager Notes 1.3 Assessing the Release Notes for DECwrite V3.1 ________________________Note ________________________ Do not delete the release notes for earlier DECwrite versions. _____________________________________________________ 1.4 Reporting Problems If you encounter problems while using DECwrite, please submit a problem report to your sales representative. When submitting your report, it is important that you supply enough information to enable the DECwrite engineering team to reproduce and correct your problem. Please be sure to supply the following information when you report a problem: o Hardware platform and configuration, version of operating system, and version of DECwrite. For DECwrite on OpenVMS systems, be sure to indicate whether you are using a VAX or an Alpha system. o Describe both the system on which DECwrite runs and the display device (in the case of a workstation, these are both the same system). o Any optional software you have installed that affects the base system, and the version of that software. o The sequence of functions that you performed o The expected results o The observed results o Any error messages that were displayed In addition, please provide the following files: o All documents used during the editing session o All style files used during the session o The journal file o Any linked files 1-2 System Manager Notes System Manager Notes 1.4 Reporting Problems DECwrite journals the operations you perform during an editing session in a file with an extension of .djl. For example, if you edit a file called REPORT.DOC, the journal file for the editing session will be called: REPORT.DJL Using the original documents (if any), the style file, and the journal, the DECwrite engineering team can replay your editing session. 1.5 Installation Notes The following release notes provide information about the installation of DECwrite Version 3.1. 1.5.1 XUI No Longer Supported As of DECwrite V3.0 DECwrite supports only the DECwindows[TM] Motif[R] user interface. The DECwindows XUI[TM] user interface is no longer supported. 1.5.2 Upgrade to DECwindows Motif Version 1.1 Recommended If you are using the DECwindows Motif Version 1.0 user interface, Digital strongly recommends that you upgrade your system to DECwindows Motif Version 1.1. To find out what version you are running, choose Help => On Version from the Motif Session Manager window. 1.5.3 Using DECwrite and DECpresent Clip Art on the Same System The following release notes provide information about the clip art directories on systems where both DECpresent[TM] V1.0 and DECwrite V3.1 are installed. 1.5.3.1 Shared WRITE$CLIPART Directory on OpenVMS Systems DECwrite V3.1 and DECpresent V1.0 share clip art direc- tories. Both write$startup.com and present$startup.com define the clip art directory WRITE$CLIPART and the installation procedures make sure these logicals are synchronized. System Manager Notes 1-3 System Manager Notes 1.5 Installation Notes 1.5.3.2 DECpresent Clipart File Extensions If you have DECpresent V1.0 installed, you probably know that DECpresent included some clip art files that used a file extension of .DDIF. Those same files use the .DOC file extension when installed during the DECwrite installation. After installing DECwrite V3.1, DECpresent clip art files with an extension of .DDIF are obsolete. If no users have linked to the .DDIF files (which are typically included and not linked to DECpresent slides), you can delete them from the WRITE$CLIPART directory. Delete the .DDIF files using the following command: $ delete WRITE$CLIPART:[...]*.ddif;* If users have linked to the .DDIF clip art files, they can use File => Links => Modify Link to change the file extension on their links, or the system manager can duplicate the .doc clip art with a .ddif extension. 1.5.4 Sample DECwrite Documents During installation, DECwrite creates a directory for various example documents. The WRITE$EXAMPLES directory contains documents used in the DECwrite Getting Started exercises, keyboard overlay templates, sample graphics, and other useful documents. For more information, review the readme.txt file in that directory. This file lists the complete contents of the directory. 1.6 Font and Font Utility Notes This section contains information related to fonts and the DECwrite Font Utility. 1.6.1 Size of Font Family Menus RESTRICTION: There is a practical limit to the number of fonts that can be added to the DECwrite/DECpresent font family menus. 1-4 System Manager Notes System Manager Notes 1.6 Font and Font Utility Notes WORKAROUND: When using the font utility, select fewer than approximately 100 fonts to be accessible to DECwrite or DECpresent. If you select more than 100 fonts, the list of fonts displayed in the resulting multi-column font family menus may be too large to display completely on your workstation screen. 1.6.2 Font Families with Condensed and Expanded Variants RESTRICTION: DECwrite V3.1 supports width variants as new font families. For example, if you have installed the Helvetica font family in both normal and condensed widths, then those fonts will be named "Helvetica" and "Helvetica Condensed", respectively. WORKAROUND: None. 1.6.3 Font Names Truncated in the DECwrite Option Menu PROBLEM: When displayed in the DECwrite function bar, some font names are truncated so only a portion of the font name is displayed. This is because some of the fonts installed on your system have long names. DECwrite centers the names in the function bar option box, based on the longest name used on your system. WORKAROUND: Use the DECwrite Font Utility to shorten the name of the fonts you have installed. See the Installation Guide for more information about the Font Utility. 1.6.4 Fonts Not Found PROBLEM: DECwrite displays a "font not found" message when you attempt to open a document containing a large number (greater than 78) of fonts (each point size, style, and family used counts as a separate font). You may also encounter this problem if you have opened a number of files from the same DECwrite session. WORKAROUND: o Ensure that you have installed your fonts correctly-see the DECwrite Installation Guide for OpenVMS. System Manager Notes 1-5 System Manager Notes 1.6 Font and Font Utility Notes o If you have not added any new fonts to DECwrite using the Font Utility, then follow these steps: 1. Increase the server's open file limit from 92 to at least 170 in the server detached process startup section of the SYS$MANAGER:DECW$STARTSERVER.COM file. 2. Increase CHANNELCNT from 128 to at least 206 under the OpenVMS SYSGEN Utility. You will need to save the current parameters and then re-boot your system. o If you have added new fonts to DECwrite using the Font Utility, before starting the DECwindows server, define the logical name DECW$SERVER_FILE_LIMIT to be 200 or 200+n where n is the number of fonts added. For 20 fonts, the command would be: $ DEFINE/SYSTEM DECW$SERVER_FILE_LIMIT 220 Also run SYSGEN and increase CHANNELCNT from its current value by n units, where n is the number of fonts added. 1.6.5 Missing Font Metrics Directory PROBLEM: If the directory assigned to contain font metrics does not exist, DECwrite aborts and returns you to command level after you select an existing document using the Open Document window or after you choose New Document attributes for a new document. WORKAROUND: Restore the directory and its files. The directory is pointed to by the logical name SYS$PS_FONT_ METRICS. 1.6.6 Required Font for DECwrite RESTRICTION: If the screen font for Helvetica Bold 12 point is not installed, DECwrite will not start and the following message will appear: Unable to locate fonts. WORKAROUND: DECwrite will perform a number of font fallbacks if various fonts are missing, but it requires at least one known font to fall back to. That font is Helvetica Bold 12 point. 1-6 System Manager Notes System Manager Notes 1.6 Font and Font Utility Notes If the font is not available on a particular X server or workstation, a font alias file may be used to map Helvetica Bold 12 point to one of the available fonts. 1.6.7 No Right Double Quote in DECtech Font RESTRICTION: If you insert the character Right Double Quote, and you are using the DECtech font, a double quote is displayed on the screen, but nothing is printed. WORKAROUND: Change the font of the Right Double Quote to another font. System Manager Notes 1-7 2 ________________________________________________________________ User Notes This chapter describes supplemental information for DECwrite users. 2.1 New Functionality DECwrite V3.1 now offers Export to Bookreader functional- ity on the OpenVMS Alpha systems. 2.2 Problems Fixed Since DECwrite V3.0 The main problems addressed in this release include the following: o DECwrite V2.1 incompatibility problems have been resolved; these fixes include: - V2.1 preference file (WRITE$STARTUP.INI) is now fully compatible with DECwrite V3.0 and DECwrite V3.1 - V2.1 documents containing tables in page layouts can now be successfully opened - V2.1 documents containing tables that are closely packed together can now be formatted correctly. o Blank pages no longer appear in multi-page tables. o Index information is no longer lost after saving a document. o Table of Contents can now be created at the start of documents using the Manual Style File. DECwrite V3.1 includes a quick reference document that summarizes DECwrite features. A hardcopy version of this document is provided with the DECwrite distribution kit. During installation, DECwrite places a PostScript[R] version of this document in the following location: SYS$HELP:DECWRITE031_REF.PS 2.4 DECwindows Motif Notes The following sections describe notes about using DECwrite with DECwindows Motif. 2.4.1 Displaying the Help Index PROBLEM: The index to the DECwrite help is not available from the DECwrite help menu. WORKAROUND: To view the index of help topics, press the Help key in any DECwrite window or dialog box to display a Help window. In the Help window, choose Open Navigation Window from the File Menu. 2.4.2 Window Resize Problems PROBLEM: The DECwrite document window appears smaller than expected and you cannot resize the window to its correct size. WORKAROUND: Edit your Motif resource file and be sure the following entries exist and are set as follows: Mwm*clientAutoPlace: false Mwm*InteractivePlacement: false After you change the settings, restart the window manager. If you prefer to define these entries as true, you must position the DECwrite window in the top left corner of your display screen and be sure not to move the window until DECwrite has completely displayed the document window; otherwise, the resize problems will continue to appear. User Notes 2-3 User Notes 2.4 DECwindows Motif Notes The Motif resource file is located in your DECW$USER_ DEFAULTS directory and is called DECW$MWM.DAT. The DECW$USER_DEFAULTS directory is usually defined to be your login (or root) directory. 2.4.3 Messages Partially Obscured PROBLEM: In some circumstances, when using DECwrite/Motif, the message area will not display both message lines fully. WORKAROUND: Use the Initial Window Size option from the function bar's Zoom menu, or any other window resize operation, to see the full message text. 2.4.4 Message Reported When Page Deleted PROBLEM: The following X Windows message is reported when a page is deleted: Name: WriteHorzScroll Class: XmScrollBar The specified scrollbar value is greater than the maximum scrollbar value minus the scrollbar slider size. WORKAROUND: None. This message can be safely ignored. 2.5 Color Notes The following sections describe information concerning the Color feature. 2.5.1 Deleted Colors Reappear If Included in Style File PROBLEM: When you delete colors from a document, but not from the referenced style file, the colors will be placed back in the document the next time it is opened. WORKAROUND: Either delete the colors from the style file itself (but this will affect all documents referencing the style file), or manually re-delete the colors from the local document each time. If you find you have to do this regularly, you may find it worthwhile to make a private copy of the style file. 2-4 User Notes User Notes 2.5 Color Notes 2.5.2 Screen Sometimes Does Not Refresh Properly PROBLEM: When a textblock is colored, typing in the textblock changes the color until the screen is refreshed with CTRL/W. WORKAROUND: Use CTRL/W to refresh the screen display. 2.5.3 Reverse Video Screen Reverses Black/White PROBLEM: If you use a reverse-video screen (i.e., white text on black) on DECwindows Motif, you must set the color to black to generate white text/graphics, and you must set the color to white to generate black text/graphics. White pixels in images are changed to black and vice versa, but other colors not changed. (This does not affect Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) pictures, however.) WORKAROUND: Use the DECwrite Preferences dialog box to set "True Black and White" for the document window colors. You can place EPS pictures in floating frames with a white background so their contents can be seen. This allows you to leave the window colors set to the system defaults. 2.5.4 Mail Merge Does Not Correctly Handle Color Content PROBLEM: Mail merge does not correctly handle color content. Color is only applied to the content of the first record. Subsequent records are black and white only. WORKAROUND: None 2.6 Conditional Content Notes The following sections describe information concerning the Conditional Content feature. 2.6.1 Nested Conditional Content In A Table PROBLEM: Text Content included in a conditional table with conditional cell content is not always displayed correctly. WORKAROUND: Setting both conditions to "On" and setting "Display Active Content" may work. User Notes 2-5 User Notes 2.6 Conditional Content Notes 2.6.2 Interaction of Tables and Conditional Content PROBLEM: You may encounter problems with the interaction of conditional content and tables when the table is con- ditionalized and when the table contains conditionalized content. In particular, when Show Active Content is turned on, tables or the content of tables which are contained within conditions whose state is Off may be deleted from the document. WORKAROUND: If your document includes conditional tables or tables that have conditional content, save the document before manipulating the conditions. 2.6.3 Conditional Content and Linked Documents PROBLEM: Problems exist in the interaction of conditional content and linked documents. Documents can end up in an invalid state when they are unlinked, for example, when there is a start marker and no end marker, or vice versa. WORKAROUND: Do not insert a condition that starts in the master document and finishes in a linked document (or vice versa) and do not insert conditions that starts in one linked document and finishes in another linked document. 2.6.4 Conditional Content and Mail Merge PROBLEM: Mail Merge Documents that start with conditional content data can cause problems. WORKAROUND: Do not begin Mail Merge documents with conditional content. PROBLEM: When you use Mail Merge with a document containing conditional content, the first output document includes the conditional content whether the condition is turned on or off. WORKAROUND: Include a dummy record after the header record in the record file, then discard the first document produced by Mail Merge. 2-6 User Notes User Notes 2.6 Conditional Content Notes 2.6.5 Lists Sometimes Numbered Incorrectly Problems may exist in the interaction of Numbered Lists and conditional content. List numbering may not be correctly updated when conditions are turned on/off. WORKAROUND: None 2.6.6 Cross-References To Inactive Content Are Displayed PROBLEM: Cross-references to conditional content that is inactive is displayed, although it should not be. In addition, the label or page number of the referenced content may be inaccurate. WORKAROUND: None. 2.6.7 Hidden Content Symbol May Be Displayed Erroneously PROBLEM: When the content of a table cell is conditional, the # hidden symbol is sometimes displayed for content that is active. WORKAROUND: None. 2.7 Export to Bookreader Notes The following sections describe information concerning the Export to Bookreader feature. ________________________Note ________________________ The Export to Bookreader feature is now supported on OpenVMS Alpha systems. _____________________________________________________ 2.7.1 Encapsulated PostScript Files Not Displayed Using Bookreader PROBLEM: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files will not be displayed when a document is exported to Bookreader on a color workstation. WORKAROUND: Use a monochrome workstation while exporting the document to Bookreader. User Notes 2-7 User Notes 2.7 Export to Bookreader Notes 2.7.2 Bookreader Scrolling Problems with Graphics and Text PROBLEM: The export of graphics and text that are in close proximity may not be displayed by the Bookreader correctly as you scroll through a topic. For example, the problem can occur if you mix graphic text and text block text, as shown in the following example: +----------------------------------------------------------+ | ........................ | | Graphic text labels . text in text block . | | ........................ | | | | | You may also encounter scrolling problems when you use rules or rectangles around text. WORKAROUND: When you create adjacent or overlaying text items, use a text block to contain each text item. When drawing rules, use the following guidelines: o When drawing rules above, below, or around text, set the attributes of the rules as follows: Outline - On Color - Black Pattern - Solid black (no pattern) Rule - Solid Pen - Square Arrowhead - None Corners - 0 pt Fill - Off Color - White Pattern - Solid Rules with these attributes will be exported as text rules and will scroll properly in the Bookreader. o When drawing rules around graphics, or when draw- ing lines within a graphic, do not use the above attributes. Instead, change at least one of the attributes to ensure that DECwrite exports the rule as a graphic object. For example, change the Pen setting to round. 2-8 User Notes User Notes 2.7 Export to Bookreader Notes 2.7.3 Undefined Symbol Error PROBLEM: In some circumstances, if you open a document and immediately select Export to Bookreader, the export may fail with the error message: Undefined Symbol in chunk SYMBOL = WORKAROUND: If you encounter this problem, repeat the export operation and it will succeed. If you have paged through the document before the export operation, the error will not appear. 2.8 Image Notes The following sections describe restrictions and problems you may run into while using images in your DECwrite documents. 2.8.1 Deleting External Image Files PROBLEM: If you import, include or make a local copy of a previously linked image, you must not delete the image file until you have saved the DECwrite document. If the image is deleted prior to saving the document, the image will not be included in the document, and the journal from that session will not play back correctly. WORKAROUND:If the image file is to be deleted, do so after the DECwrite document has been saved. 2.8.2 Warning Messages from Motif Screen Captures PROBLEM: If you linked to bitonal images produced by DECwindows Motif V1.0 Capture Screen, you will see, and can safely ignore, the following warning messages: "%ISL-W-INVATRVAL, invalid attribute value for item code 621412407 value 256, index 0." 2.9 File Selection Notes The following sections provide information about choosing files for linking, editing, and other DECwrite functions that require you to choose a file name from a dialog box. User Notes 2-9 User Notes 2.9 File Selection Notes 2.9.1 Some Remote File Specifications Not Supported PROBLEM: If you create links to documents or images on remote OpenVMS nodes and specify the file names in the form NODE:: "FOO.DOC", the document can be saved; however, when the document is opened, the linked-to file cannot be opened. WORKAROUND: Do not use quotes around file names or directory specifications when linking to a document or image on a remote OpenVMS node. 2.9.2 Incomplete File Specification PROBLEM: In the File Selection dialog, when a directory is selected by double clicking on its name, the directory name is not displayed in the file specification field if there are no files in the directory matching the specified filter. If a filename is then typed into the file specification field without typing a disk/directory specification, that file or document is read from/written to the default directory from which DECwrite was started, and not to the currently selected directory. WORKAROUND: Always ensure that file specifications include both disk and directory. 2.10 Table of Contents and Index Notes The following sections describe information about using table of contents (TOCs) and Indexes. 2.10.1 Index Entry with an Invalid Page Number PROBLEM: If you insert an index in a document on a page that appears before the index entries, and the insertion changes the index entries' page numbers, the index will be incorrect. The resulting index number will either be zero or the old page's page number. WORKAROUND: The index must follow the pages on which the index entries appear. 2-10 User Notes User Notes 2.10 Table of Contents and Index Notes 2.10.2 Long Lines in Table of Contents PROBLEM: Multiline titles in a table of contents wrap at the text block's right edge instead of at the page number margin. WORKAROUND: Use a hard return to re-wrap the line. 2.10.3 Problems Regenerating Table of Contents The following sections describe known restrictions when regenerating a table of contents. 2.10.3.1 Custom Page Layout PROBLEM: If you create custom layout (for example, add a textblock or change the size or location of existing text blocks) on a page used in a table of contents, those pages will not be deleted when the table of contents is regenerated. The pages are marked as customized, and thus are not deleted. WORKAROUND: Create page styles with the appropriate layout, and specify those in the Table of Contents style. 2.10.3.2 Change Pages Enabled PROBLEM: If you regenerate a table of contents for a document with the change pages feature enabled, DECwrite inserts extraneous blank pages. WORKAROUND: Delete the newly created blank pages. 2.10.3.3 Regenerate Table Of Contents When Opening Master Document PROBLEM: When you open a document that links to several other documents, Table of Contents entries for titles in the linked documents will not be correct until you regenerate the Table of Contents. For example, some page numbers in the Table of Contents may appear in a format such as "". This means the Table of Contents must be regenerated. WORKAROUND: Regenerate the Table of Contents before printing or exporting the document. User Notes 2-11 User Notes 2.10 Table of Contents and Index Notes 2.10.3.4 Delete Table Of Contents With Manual Style File PROBLEM: "Delete TOC" does not work with the Manual style file. WORKAROUND: Manually delete the Table of Contents using delete pages. 2.11 Style File Notes The following sections describe information about using and modifying style files. 2.11.1 Problems Opening a Document After Modifying the Style File PROBLEM: DECwrite supports different types of styles, such as title, list, footnote, and paragraph styles. If, while editing a style file, you delete a style and assign the same name to a different type of style, you may have problems when you later open a document that uses that style file. WORKAROUND: Within a style file, do not delete a style of one type and then use the same name for a style of a different type. If you must assign the same name to a different style type, make sure the deleted style is not used in any documents that use the style file. In general, if you make extensive changes to a style file, save the original version of the style file until you are sure all documents that use the style file can be opened and saved safely and that they appear correctly formatted. 2.11.2 Circular Style File References PROBLEM: When creating a document, DECwrite does not detect cases where: o A document is linked to itself as a style file o A document is linked to a style file which has links that refer back to themselves or to the base document These documents are said to have circular references. When such a document is saved and then opened, DECwrite displays a message stating that there is a circular reference. 2-12 User Notes User Notes 2.11 Style File Notes WORKAROUND: To find and remove the circular reference, you must follow the chain of references. Here are two examples of repairing documents with circular references: 1. Doc1.doc is linked to itself. If you accidentally use the document you are editing as its own style file, the next time you open the document DECwrite displays a message stating the following: This document's style file, doc1.doc, requires style file doc1.doc, causing a circular reference. DECwrite also displays the Alternate Style File dialog box. This allows you to relink to a different style file to correct the problem. In this case: o Make a copy of the base document. For example, copy it to doc1.doc_style. o Edit doc1.doc_style. Note that it still has a circular reference. DECwrite displays the Alternate Style File dialog box. Choose None for a style file and save the document. o Finally, edit doc1.doc and specify doc1.doc_style as its style file using the Alternate Style File dialog box. 2. Doc1.doc is linked to a style file, example.doc_style, that is linked to itself. Attempting to edit doc1.doc also displays a circular reference message that names example.doc_style as the style file causing the circular reference. Edit this style file. This time the message states that example.doc_style is linked to itself. Use the Alternate Style File dialog box to set its style file to None and save example.doc_ style. User Notes 2-13 User Notes 2.11 Style File Notes 2.11.3 Problem Choosing an Alternate Style File PROBLEM: A new style file selected in the Alternate Style File dialog box is not saved and the dialog box appears again the next time you open the document. WORKAROUND: You may have exited or closed the document immediately after changing the style file. Be sure to choose File => Save before exiting the document. 2.11.4 Style Files Must Use Private Library Links PROBLEM: Style files should not use "With Document" links. WORKAROUND: If a style file contains links, the File Location Type for those links must be Private Library or System Library. This is a restriction only for style files that you want to use with documents that reside in different directories. 2.11.5 Multiple Style Files Must Use the Same Document Size PROBLEM: If the style file for your document links to another style file, and the two style files use different page sizes, incorrect page sizes will appear in your document. WORKAROUND: All style file documents that are used together must have the same document page size. 2.12 Macro Notes The following sections describe information about using and maintaining DECwrite macros. 2.12.1 Colon and Angle Brackets Not Allowed as Macro Trigger Key PROBLEM: You cannot use the following keys as macro trigger keys. If you do, you will not be able to access your other macros or editor keypad keys requiring a Gold key sequence: o Gold (PF1) colon (:) o Colon (:) o Left Angle Brackets (<) 2-14 User Notes User Notes 2.12 Macro Notes o Right Angle Bracket (>) WORKAROUND: None. 2.12.2 Macros and the Print Dialog Box PROBLEM: It is not possible to create a DECwrite macro that sets up various options in the Print dialog box. WORKAROUND: None. 2.12.3 Function Bar Color Dialog Boxes Used in Macros PROBLEM: The function bar color dialog boxes are not displayed during playback of macros. WORKAROUND: Do not use a macro sequence to launch a Function Bar dialog. Instead, use the Text Attributes, Graphics, and Table Attributes dialog boxes. 2.12.4 Use of the Do key in a Macro PROBLEM: If you record a macro that contains a Do key sequence, this key sequence be performed during recording of the macro. However, the Do key sequence will not be performed during playback of the macro. WORKAROUND: None. 2.13 Table Notes The following sections describe information about using tables in DECwrite. 2.13.1 Nested Tables Are Not Supported PROBLEM: This feature has been retired. WORKAROUND: Nested tables created with older versions of DECwrite can be edited with DECwrite V3.0 and V3.1. 2.13.2 Split Tables Always Start on New Page PROBLEM: When a table is split across multiple pages, the first part of the table will always start on a new page, even if there is room remaining on the current page. WORKAROUND: Use Control-P or Control-L to manually insert page breaks within the table at the desired rows. User Notes 2-15 User Notes 2.13 Table Notes 2.13.3 Table Bottom Rule Sometime Not Visible PROBLEM: The bottom rule of parts of multi-page tables is sometimes not visible. WORKAROUND: None. This is a cosmetic problem. 2.13.4 Table Join Only Works On First Two Selected Tables PROBLEM: Joining more than two selected tables does not work. WORKAROUND: Use multiple steps to join the selected tables. 2.13.5 Applying Table Styles To Multi-Page Tables PROBLEM: When a table style is applied to a multi-page table, all parts of the table on different pages are modified individually (i.e. as if they were entirely seperate tables). WORKAROUND: None. 2.13.6 Table Cells Cannot Flow Across Pages PROBLEM: If a large amount of text is inserted into a table cell, the table will not fit on a page and will not be broken across table chunks. WORKAROUND: Resize the table cell so that the entire text fits onto the page. 2.13.7 Importing Large Text Files Into Table Cells PROBLEM: Importing large text files using the As Is option in the Import Text File dialog box causes the table cell to overflow as described in Section 2.13.6. WORKAROUND: None. 2.13.8 Page Styles That Contain Trim Texblocks Containing Tables PROBLEM: A page style that contains a Trim textblock which includes a table will cause a document to be formatted incorrectly. The user may notice textblocks missing in the main body of each page and navigation around the document is difficult. 2-16 User Notes User Notes 2.13 Table Notes WORKAROUND: Insert the Trim Textblock inside a Fixed Frame and globally reapply the page style. 2.14 Search Notes The following sections describe information about search, search & replace, and other DECwrite search features. 2.14.1 Search does not ignore hidden symbols PROBLEM: Find will not locate content which includes hidden symbols, e.g. Find will not locate "Hi Bob" in "Hi {Bob}" or "Hi¿ Bob" (where ¿ represents the anchor point for a frame, for example). WORKAROUND: None. 2.14.2 Search Does Not Always Return Correct Order PROBLEM: Searching does not locate instances of the search string within table cells or in textblocks within graphics in the same sequential order as instances in the content containing the tables or graphics. WORKAROUND: None. 2.14.3 Special Characters in Search Expressions PROBLEM: DECwrite includes several search capabilities, including the ability to search for special characters (such as end-of-paragraph markers and frame anchor points). You can also use search expressions to search for combinations of characters, such as all words that begin with L and include an M somewhere else in the word. However, you cannot combine these two features by using search expressions to search for special characters. For more information about search expressions and searching for special characters, see the DECwrite User's Guide. WORKAROUND: None. 2.14.4 Labels Not Found on Backward Searches PROBLEM: Backward searches do not find all label text. WORKAROUND: Perform a forward search if label text must be included in the search string. User Notes 2-17 User Notes 2.15 Printing Notes 2.15 Printing Notes The following sections describe information about printing. 2.15.1 EPS Files Containing TIFF Headers May Not Print PROBLEM: Printing a EPS file containing a TIFF header may not print. WORKAROUND: None. 2.15.2 Objects Can Be Too Complex to Print PROBLEM: It is possible to have an object so complex that it exceeds the hardware capability of a given PostScript printer. As a result, an attempt to print a document with that object will fail. For example, a polyline with more than 1500 segments cannot be printed on some printers. Another example is a complex drawing (such as the world map from the clip art collection) filled with a pattern (such as basket weave). WORKAROUND: Simplify the object if possible. For example, with the complex polyline, create it from several polylines, each with fewer segments. Another option is to convert the drawing to an image using the Print Screen utility. You can then link to the image using File => Links => Link to Image. For the pattern fills of complex objects, choose a shade of gray instead of a pattern. 2.15.3 Printing to Typesetters PROBLEM: Documents with page sizes other than 8½ x 11 inches will not print correctly on some PostScript typesetters. The image is cut off at 11 inches or is incorrectly positioned so as to be partially off the paper. WORKAROUND: DECwrite does not support PPD (PostScript Printer Description) files, thus does not know about various device-specific setup commands. It is possible to add a line to the PostScript file to set the correct information for a particular device. For example, to set an 11 x 17 inch page on a Linotype L300 typesetter, where the desired width, height, margin and 2-18 User Notes User Notes 2.15 Printing Notes orientation have been defined (defaults are width = 792 (11 inches) and height = 612 (8.5 inches)): statusdict begin width height margin orientation setpageparams end 2.15.4 DECwrite crashes printing file containing LiveLinks PROBLEM: On OpenVMS Alpha platforms, printing a document which contains LiveLinks may cause DECwrite to access violate. WORKAROUND: Remove the LiveLink(s) from the document before printing. 2.15.5 DECwrite Support for Non-PostScript Printers PROBLEM: DECwrite supports PostScript printers. Printing generally works on un-supported printers also except for the last page which does not print. WORKAROUND: Insert a blank page at the end of your document and then print. 2.16 Linking and Data Block Notes The following sections describe information about linking to pictures, images, documents, and other data. When you link to a document, a data block indicates where the linked data will appear in your document. This section also includes some notes about using data blocks. ________________________Note ________________________ The Link to Spreadsheet, Database, and Builder menu options are not supported on OpenVMS Alpha systems. _____________________________________________________ 2.16.1 Data Block Graphic Attributes Cannot Be Changed PROBLEM: The graphic attributes of data blocks cannot be modified. WORKAROUND: The data block can be placed in a frame on which the graphics attributes are set. However, any fill attributes of the frame will not be visible under the data block. User Notes 2-19 User Notes 2.16 Linking and Data Block Notes 2.16.2 Double Clicking on an Unlinked Data block PROBLEM: If you double click on a data block which is not linked to an application, DECwrite will display the following message. Invocation has failed WORKAROUND: None. Ignore the message. 2.16.3 Messages on Link to Document PROBLEM: When documents are linked together, any that use a different style file from the parent (top-level) document will have their style file changed. It is possible to get extra messages about these style file changes. WORKAROUND: Starting with DECwrite V2.0, you must use one style for all linked documents. Be sure to use File => Change Style File to reformat your subdocuments with the same, common style file before you create the links. 2.16.4 Messages on Local Copy From Link PROBLEM: When using Modify Link to make a local copy of a formerly linked object, the following message will be incorrectly displayed: "Please select a link or move to a page in a linked document" WORKAROUND: None. The message can be safely ignored. 2.16.5 Copying Data Blocks Between Documents PROBLEM: If you copy or cut and paste a "With Document" data block from one document to another in a different directory, DECwrite does not adjust the File Location Type properly. For example, assume that you are working on two documents: o [williams]report.doc and [williams.memos]memo.doc on an OpenVMS system o c:\report.doc and c:\memo.doc on a Microsoft Windows system o /usr/users/williams/report.doc and /usr/user/williams /memos/memo.doc on an ULTRIX system 2-20 User Notes User Notes 2.16 Linking and Data Block Notes In addition, report.doc is linked to an image whose File Location Type is "With Document." Cutting the image from report.doc and pasting it into memo.doc does not change the File Location Type to "Private Library." WORKAROUND: Use the Modify Link dialog box on the Links menu to adjust the File Location Type properly. In this example, you would change it to be "Private Library" or "Network Library." 2.16.6 Saving a Document with Links to a Different Directory PROBLEM: When saving a document that contains "With Document" application links or data links, the linked-to files are not copied to the new directory. WORKAROUND: If appropriate, use a File Location Type of "Private Library" or copy the linked-to files to the new directory. 2.16.7 Incorrect Update of a LiveLink to a DECdecision/Calc Spreadsheet PROBLEM: During an update of a LiveLink to a DECdecision /Calc spreadsheet, you get one of the following errors: o If the original data is a range of a spreadsheet, the updated data shows the whole spreadsheet. o The updated data looks different from the original (different font, or no formatting) o The updated data block is empty WORKAROUND: Do not use the LiveLink automatic update. Instead, update the spreadsheet manually by: 1. Invoking DECdecision/Calc from DECwrite by double- clicking on the data block or by selecting the data block and then using the DECwrite File => Links => Invoke Application menu option 2. Updating the LiveLink by choosing the Calc File =>Update LiveLink... menu option User Notes 2-21 User Notes 2.16 Linking and Data Block Notes 2.16.8 Network Links and Passwords PROBLEM: If you create a network library link to a file on another node and use a password to allow access to the file, the password will be written into the DDIF file, creating a potential security problem. An example of this type of file specification is: node"user user_password"::device:[dir]myfile.doc WORKAROUND: Use proxies to allow access to remote files to avoid use of the node "user user_password" syntax. 2.17 Journaling Notes DECwrite uses a feature called journaling to prevent loss of data while you work. The following sections provide some release notes about journaling. 2.17.1 Font Changes and Journal Files PROBLEM: If you add new fonts to DECwrite on one system, you can play back DECwrite journal files only on that system or on systems having the same font environment. To have the same font environment, you must have identical: o Font initialization files (write$fonts.ini) o Screen font files o Printer font files o Font metric files If you do not follow this practice, fonts accessed in the original journal file may not appear on the screen or in the resulting .doc file. Instead, the default font family and spacing (Times) will replace those font references. WORKAROUND: Replay the journal on a system that has the same font environment. 2-22 User Notes User Notes 2.17 Journaling Notes 2.17.2 Journal Recovery When Document Name Is Changed PROBLEM: If you are editing a document A and include a document B, and then use Save As to save to B, you will not be able to recover the session successfully, because you have overwritten the previous contents of document B. WORKAROUND: Do not change the state of dependent files during a session. 2.17.3 Journals from Earlier Versions Used with DECwrite PROBLEM: In general, it is not possible to successfully play back journals recorded by versions of DECwrite earlier than V3.0. In some cases, attempting such a replay will cause DECwrite to crash. WORKAROUND: None. Play back journals before upgrading to DECwrite V3.1. 2.18 Spell Check Notes The following sections describe information about spell checking DECwrite documents. 2.18.1 Spell Check Dialog Box Disappears After Switching Input Focus to Another Window PROBLEM: If you start Spell Check and then select any other window (for example, a DECterm window, or the file selection dialog box for any other application), the Spell Check dialog box disappears, and DECwrite displays the message "Canceled." WORKAROUND: When using the Spell Check, complete your work before selecting another window. ________________________Note ________________________ Spell Check Word and Spell Check All both operate on a select region. You can resume spell checking where you left off by creating a select region starting with the word after the last word you checked. _____________________________________________________ User Notes 2-23 User Notes 2.18 Spell Check Notes 2.18.2 Spell Checking Words with "Do Not Hyphenate" Symbols PROBLEM: If you spell check a word that contains a "Do Not Hyphenate" symbol, the Spell Check software will identify the word as two words, separated by the "Do Not Hyphenate" symbol. WORKAROUND: Place the "Do Not Hyphenate" symbol before the word and not within the word. 2.18.3 Spell Checking Of Index Entries PROBLEM: When creating index entries, if you place the cursor inside a word and then use the Index Actions item (on the Elements menu) to add the word as an index entry, the word is added properly. However, subsequent spell checking operations will flag the indexed word as a misspelling. WORKAROUND: Place the cursor just before or just after the word when adding it as an index entry. 2.19 Cross-References and Variables Notes The following sections describe information about using DECwrite cross-references and variables. 2.19.1 Variables that Wrap Across Lines PROBLEM: Variables can be assigned to lines of text that wrap across line breaks. However, there are two restrictions associated with multiline variables: o If the variable is on a page style, you will notice that the wrapping is removed when you display the page style. Instead of wrapping to the next line, the variable will extend beyond the end of the first line. o Elsewhere in your document, multiline variables sometimes do not wrap after certain editing operations. WORKAROUND: To reformat a multiline variable on a page style, force DECwrite to reformat the line by deleting and re-inserting a character near the beginning of the line. To reformat a variable elsewhere in your document: 1. Choose Utilities => Variables to display the Variables dialog box. 2-24 User Notes User Notes 2.19 Cross-References and Variables Notes 2. Select the variable in the list box. 3. Click on Define. DECwrite will reformat the line of text and the variable will wrap to the next line. 2.19.2 Multiline Cross References and Align Line PROBLEM: You cannot use the Align Line or WPS-PLUS Center command on any line with a Cross reference. If you do, DECwrite V3.1 will not be able to read the document. WORKAROUND: Do one of the following: o Use the alignment option box in the function bar o Choose Format => Paragraph Attributes and use the Paragraph Attributes dialog box to align the line o Apply a style with the appropriate alignment 2.19.3 Copying Multiline Cross-References PROBLEM: If there are multiline cross-references in a page style or in a text block inside a frame, when you insert a page or paste the frame, the cross-reference text will not be properly formatted. Instead, it all be in one line. WORKAROUND: Any action that causes reformatting (editing the paragraph or using the Repaginate command) will correct the error. 2.19.4 Multiline Cross-References Do Not Hyphenate PROBLEM: Multiline cross-references do not get hyphenated. When they occur in a justified paragraph, spacing is used to justify the line. WORKAROUND: None. 2.20 Graphics and Frames Notes The following sections describe information about using graphics and frames. User Notes 2-25 User Notes 2.20 Graphics and Frames Notes 2.20.1 In-Margin Frames Within a Table PROBLEM: An in-margin frame may be placed anywhere within a table, but it cannot be moved outside the table's boundaries. WORKAROUND: An extra table column at the far left can be created to contain in-margin frames. 2.20.2 Cannot Align Graphics Text Lines Outside a Frame PROBLEM: You cannot align graphics lines that are on a page and are not contained in a frame by using Align Line from the Format menu. The keyboard equivalents Do A R and Do A L do not work as expected. WORKAROUND: Place the line(s) in a frame and then choose align again. Alternatively, you can use the Draw menu's Align dialog box, which works inside or outside a frame. 2.20.3 Using Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) Graphics The following sections describe information about using EPS graphics in DECwrite documents. 2.20.3.1 Encapsulated PostScript Files Using Carriage Returns as Line Separators PROBLEM: Some producers of Encapsulated PostScript files use carriage returns as line separators. DECwrite can only handle such files that use line feeds. As a result, the Encapsulated PostScript file will not print correctly. WORKAROUND: The carriage returns must be converted to line feeds with an editor or other utility. 2.20.3.2 Encapsulated PostScript Files and Black Window Background PROBLEM: Encapsulated PostScript (EPS) files do not display correctly if the window background color is black. Black objects are rendered on a black background, making them invisible. WORKAROUND: Use the DECwrite Preferences dialog box to set "True Black and White" for the document window colors. You may also place the EPS file in a floating frame with a white background so its contents can be seen, thus leaving the window colors as system defaults. 2-26 User Notes User Notes 2.20 Graphics and Frames Notes 2.20.4 Scaling Graphics and Frames This section describes release notes about scaling DECwrite graphics and frames. 2.20.4.1 Artifact of "Scaling Contents" of Vertical or Horizontal Line When Scale Contents is selected on the Scale dialog box, all dimensional and size attributes of an object are scaled. For example, the thickness of borders of objects are scaled. PROBLEM: If you scale the contents of a vertical or horizontal line, the thickness of the border of the line will not be scaled. WORKAROUND: Put the line in a frame and scale the frame. Or, group the line with other objects and scale the group. Or change the line's graphic attributes with the Graphic Attributes dialog box. 2.20.4.2 Scaling of Groups That Include a Frame PROBLEM: If a group contains a frame as one of its objects, scale and undo operations do not handle the positioning of any objects inside the frame correctly. The objects inside the frame are moved with respect to the frame. WORKAROUND: Scale the frame separately. 2.20.4.3 Undo Mirror Scaling of Frames and Data blocks PROBLEM: If you scale a frame or data block and turn it inside out (to produce a mirror image), undo does not position the objects as they were before the scale. WORKAROUND: None. 2.21 CDA Interoperability Notes The following sections describe information about interoperability restrictions between CDA and DECwrite. User Notes 2-27 User Notes 2.21 CDA Interoperability Notes 2.21.1 CDA Viewer Displaying DECwrite Tables PROBLEM: Any DECwrite document with table styles defined in an external style file (versus in the document itself) will not display correctly in the CDA viewer. Display problems include all the text being displayed in Courier. WORKAROUND: None. 2.21.2 Using the CDA Viewer or CDA Converters with Multiplatform Documents PROBLEM: Documents edited and saved on one operating system (for example, OpenVMS VAX) will not work with the CDA viewer or with CDA converters on another operating system (for example, Microsoft Windows) unless DECwrite V3.0 or higher is installed on that system. WORKAROUND: Open and save the file with DECwrite on the system on which you wish to view or convert. ________________________Note ________________________ No extra steps are required to open the document in DECwrite. _____________________________________________________ 2.21.3 Named Content Streams PROBLEM: Some document files created by the High Level CDA Toolkit Routines from Digital's Electronic Publishing Systems Group will not be displayed as intended in DECwrite. Specifically, files which use named content streams to synchronize text content with different galleys will be displayed differently by DECwrite V3.1 and the CDA Viewer. WORKAROUND: None. 2.21.4 GObE Files Displayed Incorrectly PROBLEM: DECwrite does not display DDIF files produced by DECplan or other applications that use the Graphical Object Editor widget (GObE). The graphics in the files appear to be shifted up the page and are cut off at the top of the frame. 2-28 User Notes User Notes 2.21 CDA Interoperability Notes WORKAROUND: The graphics in the files can be displayed correctly if the frame is resized and moved to reveal the graphics clipped above the upper frame boundary. For example, the steps to follow would be: 1. Resize the bottom boundary of the frame up to the bottom of the graphics. 2. Move the entire frame down to the original location of the bottom boundary of the frame. 3. Resize the top boundary of the frame to reveal the top portion of the graphics. 2.21.5 ODA-CDA Gateway Display Errors PROBLEM: If DECwrite files that contain graphics are converted to the ODA format using the ODA-CDA Gateway, and then converted back to DDIF, the files may be displayed differently in DECwrite than in the CDA Viewer. Parts of the graphics may be shifted relative to other parts. WORKAROUND: None. 2.22 Miscellaneous Notes The following sections describe additional release notes about DECwrite V3.1. 2.22.1 On WPS-PLUS Keypad, Change Case Does Not Work Correctly PROBLEM: Using the WPS-PLUS keypad, the uppercase key (KP3) and lowercase key (Gold KP3) change the case of the whole word when no text is selected. WORKAROUND: Change case of the word back manually. 2.22.2 Selecting a Single Character PROBLEM: You cannot select a single character by dragging the mouse from left to right across the character. WORKAROUND: Use the keyboard to select the character or drag across the character from right to left. User Notes 2-29 User Notes 2.22 Miscellaneous Notes 2.22.3 Titles Created After a Page Break Character PROBLEM: If you create a title immediately after a Page Break character (with hidden symbols turned on), it will no longer honor any page style specified as part of the break to attributes of the title style. Note that this problem is triggered by the presence of the Page Break character when the title is created, and persists even if the Page Break is later removed. WORKAROUND: Copy just the text of the title (not including the ¶ at the end). Select and Clear the entire title and the Page Break character (do not use Cut or you will overwrite the title text). Insert a new title element and paste the text previously cut. In general, it is better practice to use a title's break to next page attributes rather than to insert Page Break characters. 2.22.4 Equation Editor and Italic International characters PROBLEM: International characters (such as ä or é, for example) will be displayed as roman instead of italic in the Equation Editor. WORKAROUND: Use the backslash sequences for entering international characters-\a" and \e' in the above examples. 2.22.5 Split into Columns Yields Wrong Ordering PROBLEM: If you use the split into columns operation, the draw order for the columns is incorrect. This produces the incorrect footnote numbering as a result. For example, if you use a four-column page, the draw order should be a sequential ordering 1-2-3-4; but instead, it is a nonsequential ordering 1-4-3-2. WORKAROUND: Correct the draw order using Draw => Front on each text block, working from left to right. 2.22.6 Paragraph Labels Appear as Numerals Instead of as Text PROBLEM: You cannot use paragraph text labels from within a numeric list. Such labels will seemingly appear as random numbers instead of as text. WORKAROUND: None. 2-30 User Notes User Notes 2.22 Miscellaneous Notes 2.22.7 Excessive Zooming Corrupts Display PROBLEM: When zooming on a document, sometimes the page display is corrupted. Corruption artifacts include: highlighting not displayed, the text cursor not visible, and other problems. WORKAROUND: If these display problems occur, zoom down to the next lowest level of magnification. Note that this problem should not occur unless the Window Scale Factor as shown in the Document Attributes dialog box is greater than approximately 300%. 2.22.8 Labels Copied by Global Select PROBLEM: Global select copies labels as well as text. For example, is you use global select to copy a list item from one DECwrite document to another, the bullet character for the list item will appear as a lowercase letter o when you paste the item. Global select allows you to copy selected regions between windows. You select text in one window with MB1 and paste it into another window with MB2. WORKAROUND: Delete the lowercase letter o after you paste the list item. 2.22.9 Overwritten Text on Adjust Position and Remove Adjustment PROBLEM: Remove Adjustment (following an Adjust Position) from the Format menu overwrites text in some circum- stances. WORKAROUND: Select the line with the overwritten text and choose Remove Adjustment again. 2.22.10 Selecting multiple pages of text PROBLEM: A region of text can be selected by clicking on the start point of the region, moving to the end point of the region to be selected and pressing the Shift key and clicking again. However this may not work when the selected region spans multiple pages-clicking when the shift key is pressed may select the final textblock. User Notes 2-31 User Notes 2.22 Miscellaneous Notes WORKAROUND: Press the Select key at the start point of the region to be selected (or select a few characters using the mouse), and then use the cursor keys to extend the selection line by line to the end point of the region. 2.22.11 Starting Sublists Using Popup Menu PROBLEM: When the current insert point is not within a list, a title is created when Start Sublist is selected from the popup menu displayed by pressing MB3. It should instead start a new list. WORKAROUND: Use Insert List from the same popup menu to start a list. 2.22.12 Effect of Applying Styles to Labels of Paragraphs or Titles PROBLEM: Applying styles (or reapplying the current style) to a paragraph or title may affect the label differently than the content of the paragraph or title. Most notably, any attributes (such as bold, color, etc) of the content of the paragraph or title will be replaced by those defined in the style, but any attributes of the labels will not be changed. WORKAROUND: Select the labels and use the function bar buttons or Format menu to reapply the desired attributes. 2.22.13 Applying Text Attributes to Tables or Graphic Textblocks PROBLEM: Applying text attributes to a selected region will not modify text content contained in tables or graphic textblocks (i.e. in frames) within that region. WORKAROUND: Select the content of the tables or graphic textblocks and apply the desired text attributes. 2.23 VT1200 V2.0 Notes This section describes known problems and suggested workarounds for DECwrite V3.1 running on VT1200 V2.0 DECwindows Terminal display hardware only. 2-32 User Notes User Notes 2.23 VT1200 V2.0 Notes 2.23.1 Memory Usage PROBLEM: If the VT1200 runs out of memory, the VT1200 hangs. Server memory is consumed by opening windows (for example, documents, dialog boxes) and also by using Export to Bookreader from the DECwrite File menu. VT1200 users can monitor memory remaining by use of the VT1200's Terminal Manager dialog box. WORKAROUND: Open fewer windows at one time or obtain additional memory for the VT1200. Using Export to Bookreader, the VT1200's memory is required only for pages with images and graphics. If you still encounter documents that exhaust your VT1200's memory, use a workstation to perform the Export to Bookreader operation. 2.23.2 Using Draw => Smooth on Nonsolid Lines PROBLEM: When you use the Smooth option from the Draw menu on nonsolid (for example, dotted, or dashed) lines having a width greater than 1 point, the lines do not appear correctly on the display. WORKAROUND: Change the line type to solid line. NOTE: the document will print correctly without any workaround. 2.23.3 Display and Performance Irregularities PROBLEM: There are a number of display artifacts that appear with the VT1200. The file graphic_examples.doc in the DECwrite examples directory contains a number of these instances. In addition, performance may be slower than expected in some isolated instances. WORKAROUND: None. This problem is expected to be fixed in a future version of the VT1200. 2.24 Additional Problems and Restrictions The following sections describe common problems and recommended solutions for DECwrite users. User Notes 2-33 User Notes 2.24 Additional Problems and Restrictions 2.24.1 Problem with Numeric Keypad PROBLEM: Cannot use the numeric keypad to enter numbers. WORKAROUND: The keypad keys are reserved for users who want to assign macros to the keypad keys. To use the keypad for numeric data entry, define 10 macros, one for each key on the keypad. See the DECwrite User's Guide for more information about macros. 2.24.2 Cannot access or add a word to personal dictionary PROBLEM: Cannot access or add a word to your personal dictionary. WORKAROUND: Be sure you have a valid license for the dictionary (lexicon) that is installed. If you do not have a license for a particular lexicon, you cannot spell check or modify the dictionary, using that language. See the DECwrite Software Product Description for a list of available lexicons. 2.24.3 XLIB errors PROBLEM: XLIB errors appear in the window where DECwrite was started. WORKAROUND: These messages are harmless and can be ignored. 2.24.4 Underline for White Graphics Problem PROBLEM: The underline for white graphics text is drawn black. WORKAROUND: None, but the underline does print correctly.) 2.24.5 EMACS Keyboard Emulation Problem PROBLEM: When using the EMACS keyboard emulation, Ctrl-U and Ctrl-K operations do not work correctly. WORKAROUND: Use the menus or DECwrite keyboard equivalents to perform these functions. 2-34 User Notes User Notes 2.24 Additional Problems and Restrictions 2.24.6 Text Obscured by a pop-up menu PROBLEM: Occasionally, certain operations cause the screen to be updated improperly. For example, text obscured by a pop-up menu is sometimes not refreshed properly. WORKAROUNDL: Press Ctrl/W to refresh the screen. 2.24.7 Aligning Graphics Lines PROBLEM: You cannot align graphics lines that are on a page and are not contained in a frame by using Align Line from the Format menu. The keyboard equivalents Do A R and Do A L do not work as expected. WORKAROUND: Place the line(s) in a frame and then choose Align Line again. Alternatively, you can use the Draw menu's Align dialog box, which works inside or outside a frame. User Notes 2-35 3 ________________________________________________________________ DECchart Notes This chapter documents known problems and workarounds, known restrictions and limitations, and hardware restrictions for DECchart. 3.1 DECchart V1.6 This chapter documents known problems and workarounds, known restrictions and limitations, and hardware restrictions for DECchart Version 1.6. 3.1.1 Import Dialog Box Formats List Incomplete PROBLEM: The list of file formats in the Worksheet Import dialog box does not include the formats that correspond to any converters installed on your system in a directory other than SYS$SHARE. WORKAROUND: Ensure that all converters are installed in the SYS$SHARE directory. Alternatively, if you choose not to installed a converter in this directory, first invoke the converter from the command line to convert the file to DTIF, then import the DTIF file into the Worksheet. 3.1.2 Print Chart Dialog Box RESTRICTION: The Print Chart dialog box that appears when you choose the Print... item from the DECchart Options menu is the same as the Print Chart dialog box that appears when you choose the Print... item from the DECchart File menu. There is no context-sensitive help available on this dialog box. WORKAROUND: None. DECchart Notes 3-1 DECchart Notes 3.1 DECchart V1.6 3.1.3 File Name in Print Chart Dialog Box PROBLEM: DECchart displays a message dialog box containing the message "CHART: Filename should be specified" when you do not specify a file name in the File field in the Print Chart dialog box. WORKAROUND: Always specify a file name in the File field in the Print Chart dialog box, even if the File toggle is off. 3.1.4 Moving Overlays Causes Chart Window to Resize PROBLEM: Under some circumstances, moving an overlay causes the DECchart window to resize. WORKAROUND: If the DECchart window resizes, restore it to its former size manually. 3.1.5 Color Defaults File Ignored PROBLEM: If your CHART$DEFAULTS.DAT resource file specifies a default color selection file, DECchart ignores this setting at startup and uses the Session Manager default colors instead. WORKAROUND: None. 3-2 DECchart Notes ________________________________________________________________ Index A Change Pages ___________________________ and TOC regeneration, Adjust Position problems,
