One version is for the OpenVMS/VAX platform, and the other for the OpenVMS/Alpha platform. The installation procedure automatically selects the correct version. In addition, there are two variants of the product itself: o Defrag o Defrag PLUS The installation procedure allows you to choose to install Defrag or Defrag PLUS software. Defrag PLUS contains a scheduling process that allows for periodic scheduling of defragmentation jobs. If you do not wish to use the Defrag PLUS, install the Defrag variant. Defrag provides a more direct interface to the defragmentation process. Customers are adviced to take up the backup of the existing database before deinstalling the earlier versions of DFO. 2 Software Version Requirements Disk File Optimizer (DFO) for OpenVMS, Version V2.7 software runs on OpenVMS VAX Versions 6.2, 7.1, 7.2 and 7.3 and on OpenVMS Alpha Versions 6.2, 7.1-2, 7.2-1, 7.2-2, 7.3 and 7.3-1. 3 Installing the Software The following steps should help you begin the installation procedure for installing Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS V2.7 on your system. For installation details however please go through the Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS V2.7 Installation Guide. 3.1 Invoke VMSINSTAL Invoke the VMSINSTAL procedure using the following command: @SYS$UPDATE:VMSINSTAL saveset-name device-name OPTIONS N Where: saveset-name is the installation name for the component. For the Disk File Optimizer, use the following: DFG027 1 device-name is the name of the device on which you plan to mount the media, for example, MUA0:. It is not necessary to use the console drive for this installation. However, if you use the console drive, replace any media you remove when the installation is complete. OPTIONS N indicates you want to see the release notes. If you do not include this parameter, VMSINSTAL does not ask you about the release notes. Review the release notes before proceeding with the installation as they could contain additional installation information. 3.1.1 Continue Installation If you see the following message: %VMSINSTAL-W-ACTIVE, The following processes are still active * Do you want to continue anyway [NO]? Enter Y and press Return, else go to the next Step. 3.1.2 Confirm the state of the system backup To the following message: * Are you satisfied with the backup of your system disk [Yes]? Press Return. 3.1.3 Release Notes option Respond to the query on the 'Release Notes option': Release notes included with this kit are always copied to SYS$HELP. Additional Release Notes Options: 1. Recommendation: Running the IVP procedure is recommended. Press Return to run the IVP, else enter N and press Return. The rest of the installation procedure is concerned with the specific DFO variant you wish to use - DEFRAG or DEFRAG-PLUS. For specific information regarding the installation steps that follow please read the Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS Installation Guide. 3 4 Problems Fixed in DF0 V2.7 Release - Generating DFG scripts resulting in locking bursts and hangs Problem: Customer was running Defrag on all 20 nodes in a 20 node VMS cluster with 10 Alpha's (VMS 7.2-1 with DFG 2.6) and 10 VAXes (VMS 7.2 with DFG 2.6) and a common scheduling database. Customer had intermittent "locking burst" problem with Defrag on both VAX and Alpha while creating new defrag script. Solution: The code is modified to reduce the lock burst. This problem was raised in IPMT CFS.88050 and fixed in this release. - Fragmentation index is not accurate Problem: The Fragmentation index reported by Show/Volume command is not accurate, when there are less number of files (and they are contiguous). Solution: This problem was raised in as an internal QAR No 135-2-225 and fixed in this release. 5 Known Problems and Restrictions This section describes known problems and restrictions for V2.7 of the Disk File Optimizer for OpenVMS. 5.1 Support for Fibre Channel connected disks DFO V2.7 does not support Fibre Channel served disks in non-cluster configuration. 4 5.2 DECwindows Display Status and Error Messages Window Problem The Disk File Optimizer DECwindows GUI displays status and error messages in a scrolled text window that has the title Messages. Under some circumstances the message window will have the following incorrect behavior: When the Messages window appears with some application windows, especially the Create Script and Modify Script windows, the Messages window cannot be closed by pressing the OK push button. Workaround: After the Create Script or Modify Script window is closed, the Message window's OK push button will become operational again. Also, the Messages window can be closed by selecting the Close option from the window's system menu or by pressing the Alt and F4 keys together. 5.3 POLYCENTER Performance Data Collector V2.1-48 and Disk File Optimizer V2.7 If the POLYCENTER Performance Data Collector V2.1-48 software is being used on the same system as Disk File Optimizer V2.7, Disk File Optimizer should be installed AFTER the installation of the POLYCENTER Performance Data Collector . If POLYCENTER Performance Data Collector is reinstalled for ANY reason, Disk File Optimizer must be reinstalled for the /HOTFILE_DATABASE qualifier to work correctly. 5.4 POLYCENTER Performance Data Collector V2.2 and Disk File Optimizer V2.7 Two license types are available for Disk File Optimizer using the License Management Facility names: "PFO" and "DFG". POLYCENTER Performance Data Collector V2.2 does not recognize Disk File Optimizer "PFO" license. If you want to use the /HOTFILE_DATABASE qualifier and you have the "PFO" license, contact your service representative to get a "DFG" license. 5 6 Truncating Directories There has been a couple of requests to have Disk File Optimizer truncate directories. Instead of adding this feature to DFO, you should use the SET FILE/TRUNCATE DCL command. Directories never shrink they only grow. Even though you delete files in a directory, the allocated space for a directory stays the same. The following shows an example using the SET FILE/TRUNCATE command to truncate a directory: $ DIRECTORY/SIZE=ALL DIR/SIZE=ALL [SLICK]MAIL.DIR Directory DSA422:[SLICK] MAIL.DIR;1 115/140 $ SET FILE/TRUNCATE [SLICK]MAIL.DIR $ DIR/SIZE=ALL [SLICK]MAIL.DIR Directory DSA422:[SLICK] MAIL.DIR;1 115/116 Total of 1 file, 115/116 blocks. Notice in the above example that the directory is 140 blocks in size but the end of file is at block 115. The directory is then truncated to 116 blocks with the SET FILE /TRUNCATE command. 6
